The federalists were unlike the anti-federalists. The federalists were the supporters and the believers of the constitution. The name federalist itself implied a commitment to a loose, in a decentralized system of government. Federalism believes in a strong central government.  

The federalists believed that the constitution was required for a safeguard of the liberty and independence that was created by the American Revolution. Other federalists mostly believed in developing a new political philosophy. They saw the urgency of defending social gains of the Revolution. One of the great federalists' leaders, James Madison, explained that the constitution was designed as a republican remedy for the diseases most incident to republican government.

Most federalists were the most talented leaders in that era and also had the most experience in national-level work. For example, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington were two of the national-level celebrities at that period, and both of them supported the constitution. The federalists were also well funded, well organized, and made especially careful use of the printed word. The federalists were also being supported by the newspapers and media since they also posted articles and pamphlets that included the reason as to why people need to approve the constitution.
