Hunting and gathering societies which generate very little surplus food and material property are described by sociologists as economies.

The answer is subsistence.  The problem with this kind of living is that it is not consistent in providing for the people who depend on it.  There are times when an area is plentiful and there are times when it is not. This is the reason why eventually farmers were superior to hunters because they generated enough for their consumption.
