Joseph Shapiro was the first journalist to write about Martin Sostre. The journalist was a student when he known about Sostre and his political activities in jail.

He became interested in politics influenced by black muslins prisoners. they were not authorized to practice their religion in jail. or even reading the Qur'an. Or receiving visiting from their ministers like prisoners who has others religious practices. Throughout the human rights, he found ways to break the laws. And the justice gave them permission to practice Islam like others religions in jail. Many others prisoners started to use federal laws to improve their condition during their lives.

His first time in jail was in 1952 until 1964. When he got his freedom he planned to open a bookstore to help others people to understand the racial political context of the country. His Bookstore became an important place for political discussion in NY and Martin became a political target for the police. In 1967 the racial conflicts were intense and Martin was accused of drug dealer. He went to jail again. At his second time in jail, he fought alone for his freedom.

His pieces of knowledge about the law system cost to him 6 years in solitary confinement. Only when the first black women judge had the access to the justice system, Sostre get out of solitary. In 1976 he got his freedom again. At that time it was an idea about innocent people in jail and his case was revisited by the system.

He started to work with an advocate who works in his case. He started to collaborate with her in others cases of political prisoners.
