Why were railroad companies in a hurry to complete many miles of track-laying in the mid-1800s? they had to get the work done before the expected cold climate that would come with the late 1800s they were given many acres of government-owned land for every mile created they wanted to provide cheap and safe service to farmers they were worried that the us would be open to invasions if the west and east coasts weren’t connected.
