The First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) finished the power of Korea. China closed up ceding that island of Formosa and portions of Manchuria to Japan. That battle shifted geographical dominance of China to Japan. The Russo-Japanese fight (1904-5) - for control of Korea and portions of Manchuria lying between the Russian Empire and Empire of Japan - the first war in which an Asian nation defeated a European power.
