To protect their own interests, employers often accused striking workers of being what group?

I believe the answer is: Communist

Even though not all of them do this, a lot of cases happened when corporations  provide their workers with unfair salary and dangerous working condition. Since communism is perceived really negatively due to its history with the soviet union, branding them as communist would put public perception in their favor.
