Rachel is studying the causes, consequences, and treatments of mental illness. She samples 100 people diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. She provides each individual in her sample with either a new untested drug, a placebo, or a nocebo (which occurs when a person expects negative side effects of a medication). Rachel measures sympathetic nervous system arousal a week before and a week after the study. The results of the study appear in the following graph.
