An atom of an element is typically made up of three sub-shell components, which are electron, proton and neutron. Both proton and neutron are located in the nucleus portion of the atom while the electron is LOCATED OUTSIDE THE NUCLEUS. An electron has the lowest energy when it is in the ground state and he has the greatest energy when it is in an excited state. An electron become excited when it gains energy. An excited electron is able to move form the ground state [which is shell closest to the nucleus] to an higher shell [shell farther away from the nucleus] depending on the amount of energy gained.
