An aurora is a luminescent phenomenon that covers the sky and usually occurs in areas close to Earth's poles.  Their names depend on its geographic position, aurora borealis if the phenomenon occurs in the north pole and aurora australis if the phenomenon occurs in the south pole.

This is because currently Earth's magnetic poles are near the Earth's geographic poles.

In addition, this is due to the fact that the particles coming from solar winds (called coronal mass ejections, which contain protons and electrons fluxes with a large electric charge) collide with the magnetic field that surrounds the Earth (the magnetosphere) and slip to both poles, because in those areas the magnetic field is weakest.

These particles collide with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms and molecules in the atmosphere and cause the luminescent reaction. Depending on the element that intervenes in the collision, the energy released can be of one or another color.

However, sometimes may occur that the flow of energy from the Sun is strong enough to undertake a trip through the atmosphere that takes to latitudes closer to the Earth's equator. Although this is not normal with the current position of the magnetic poles and until now no auroas have been seen in terrestrial Ecuador, only in nearby regions.
