When wind slows down it deposits the sediment it is carrying. this often happens when wind moves around an obstacle, e.g. a tree or a rock. wind deposits the largest particles first, forming different deposits. sand dunes are formed when wind deposits sand forming small hills of sand. loess are formed when wind drops fine particles of clay and silt, forming vertical cliffs.
deposition by water takes place when flowing water slows down when it reaches latter land or flows into a body of still water, and it deposits the particles it was carrying, depositing the largest particles first. deposition by streams and rivers forms features such as alluvial fans and deltas. deposition by flood waters gives rise to flood plains and natural levees.
