Compressed gas has many uses. it can be held in a tank like this with a valve that can be opened to safely release small amounts of gas at a time. the valve usually releases the gas into a tube through which it travels to another container. it is only safe to allow small amounts of compressed gas out at a time. what is the most likely reason it is dangerous to break open a compressed gas tank? a) any gas would react with whatever air is around it to cause fire and electric bolts when released. b) a gas would be at such a cold temperature when it is compressed that it would cause everything to freeze around it. c) a compressed gas would expand very quickly if released uncontrollably and would hit nearby people or objects very hard. d) any compressed matter will change the shape of its container, so if the gas were released into a room, it would change the shape of the walls.

Clothing made of several thin layers of fabric with trapped air in between, often called ski clothing, is commonly used in cold climates because it is light, fashionable, and a very effective thermal insulator. so it is no surprise that such clothing has largely replaced thickand heavy old-fashioned coats. (a) consider a jacket made of five layers of 0.1-mm-thick synthetic fabric (k = 0.13 w/m·°c) with 1.5-mm-thick air space (k = 0.026 w/m·°c) between the layers. assuming the inner surface temperature of the jacket to be 28°c and the surface area to be 1.25 m2, determine the rate of heat loss through the jacket when the temperature of the outdoors is 0°c and the heat transfer coefficient at the outer surface is 25 w/m2·°c. (b) what would your response be if the jacket is made of a single layer of 0.5-mm-thick synthetic fabric? what should be the thickness of a wool fabric (k = 0.035 w/m·°c) if the person is to achieve the same level of thermal comfort wearing a thick wool coat instead of a five-layer ski jacket?

Avery long solenoid of inner radius 2.75 cm creates an oscillating magnetic field of the form = for this solenoid, =0.00425 t and =319 rad/s. (a)what is the maximum value of the induced electric field at a perpendicular distance 1.45 cm from the axis of the solenoid? (b) what is the maximum value of the inducted electric field at a point 5.85 cm perpendicular from the axis of the solenoid?

When you see distant streetlights through smog, they look dimmer and redder than they do normally. but when you see the same streetlights through fog or falling snow, they look dimmer but not redder. use your knowledge of the interstellar medium to discuss the relative sizes of the particles in smog, fog, and snowstorms compared to the wavelength of light.
