If you are skateboarding and have to make a sharp turn to avoid a branch, in which direction are you accelerating?

When you make a turn, you temporarily follow a curve, which is a
small part of a circle. That means you must  temporarily be exerting
a 'centripetal' force ... a force pointing toward the center of the circle ...
otherwise you couldn't move along a circular path. 

The force that bends your path into a circle points toward the center,
and for as long as you're moving along the circle, you have 'centripetal
acceleration', also pointing toward the center.
