What Does This Poem Mean? The hazy heat of summer’s sun
When people are out there having fun

The waters they become quite still
With just the depths still holding chill

Warm surface waters and cool down below
Separates that H-two-O

Up above new life abounds
But down below bad things are found

Dead things sink down to their doom
And decomposer numbers boom

Down deep things are somewhat a mess
‘Cause oxygen becomes much less

Down deep awaits the cool of fall
That once again will mix it all

Oxygen gets stirred around
And then more balance can be found
