1 Diagram 1.1 shows a cylinder which has a air-tight piston. The area of cross-section of
the piston is 4.0 x 104 m². A load, X of mass 1.0 kg is placed on top of the piston and the
height of the air trapped in the cylinder. (Neglect the mass of piston. Take atmospheric pressure = 1.00 ~ 10% Nm?.)
(a) Based on the kinetic theory of matter,
(i) what is the cause of the pressure acting on the inner wall of the cylinder and piston?
