Light wave is a transverse wave.

Light travels fastest in the less dense media. There are 3 states of matter: Solid, liquid and gas

Solid is the state of matter in which the particles are closely packed. The intermolecular spacing between the particles is very less and hence, it the denser state of all the states of matter.

In liquid state, the particles are not that closely packed, the intermolecular spacing between the particles is more than solid and is less dense than solid.

In gaseous state, the particles have a lot of spacing between them. There is a lot of intermolecular spacing between the particles and is the least dense of all the states of matter.

Therefore, the light wave will travel fastest through gases and then through liquids and then through solids.

Hence, the speed of light is fastest in gases.
