If periodic table is not color coded then we should look at the group to find elements which have similar chemical properties.

For example: Elements of group 1 forms basic oxides

And elements in group has equal number of valence electrons.

Like elements of  group 1 are: lithium, sodium and potassium.

luster is not a good characteristic to use by itself because luster is the property of minerals that indicates how much the surface of a mineral reflects light. the luster of a mineral is affected by the brilliance of the light used to observe the mineral surface.
