When computers (or microprocessors) are used to control devices (such as robots), registers are used as part of the control system. The following example describes how registers can be used in controlling a simple device. A robot vacuum cleaner has three wheels, A, B and C. A rotates on a spindle to allow for direction changes (as well as forward and backward movement); B and C are fixed to revolve around their axles to provide only forward and backward movement, and have an electric motor attached:
Figure 1.3
An 8-bit register is used to control the movement of the robot vacuum cleaner:
Figure 1.4
If the register contains 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 this means ‘motor B is ON and motor C is ON and both motors are turning to produce FORWARDS motion’. Effectively, the vacuum cleaner is moving forwards.
Activity 1.3
What would be the effect if the register contained the following values?
i 1 0 0 1 1 0 0 0
ii 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 1
iii 1 0 1 0 0 1 1 0

Three different objects, all with different masses, are initially at rest at the bottom of a set of steps. each step is of uniform height . the mass of each object is a multiple of the base mass : object 1 has mass 4..00m , object 2 has mass 1..96m , and object 3 has mass . when the objects are at the bottom of the steps, define the total gravitational potential energy of the three-object system to be zero. if the objects are then relocated as shown, what is the new total potential energy of the system? each answer requires the numerical coefficient to an algebraic expression. each algebraic expression is given using some combination of the variables , , and , where is the acceleration due to gravity. enter only the numerical coefficient. (example: if the answer is 1..23mgd , just enter 1.23)

Tafari worked one summer on a ship that set weather buoys in the ocean. he watched how one of the buoys moved in the water. describe which parts of the wave would cause the buoy to bob up and down. which wave property determined how fast the buoys bobbed in the water? he observed that when the wind blew harder, the ocean waves were larger, and the buoys moved away from the ship. what effect, if any, did the waves have on how far the buoys moved? explain your answer.
