So, the closer objects are to each other, the stronger their gravitational pull is. The force of gravity depends directly upon the masses of the two objects, and inversely on the square of the distance between them. This means that the force of gravity increases with mass, but decreases with increasing distance between objects. This means that for a given gravitational field strength, the greater the mass of the object, the greater its weight. Weight is a non-contact force because gravity exerts its force through a field. An object does not need to be touching the Earth to have a weight.
