Conversions involve the interpolation of a particular value in a unit to it's equivalent value in another another unit. For example, the "value" of 60 seconds is the same as the "value" of 1 minute. There are several of this conversions that apply in our daily life. Two examples are provided below

1) Using the time conversion mentioned earlier. In some countries like Nigeria, talk time on phone are bought as airtime (prepaid) and one is usually charged per second of this airtime. Phones generally use the best unit to determine the exact time one has spoken for on a call. Hence, one sees values such as 1:23:16 meaning the individual has spoken for 1 hour, 23 minutes and 16 seconds. If a call is charged at 11 kobo per second, how much (in naira) will an individual be charged for speaking for that long.

1 hour can be converted to seconds by multiplying it by 3600 = 3600 s

23 minutes can be converted to seconds by multiplying it by 60 = 1380 s

16 seconds is already in seconds and will be added to the initial conversions in seconds to have 3600 + 1380 + 16 = 4996 s

If an individual charge per second is 11k, then speaking for 4996 s will cost such an individual 4996 × 11 = 54,956 kobo

To convert the said amount to naira (which is another conversion).

1 naira has the same value as 100 kobo, thus 54,956 kobo will be equal to 54956÷100 = 549.56 naira

This means the individual will be charged 549.56 naira for speaking for 1 hour, 23 minutes and 16 seconds.

2) Conversion of height in meters to feet: Some application documents (like immigration/visa documents) require you provide your height in meters while some require you provide your height in feet. Thus, an individual of 1.8 meters, will have to convert his/her height to feet by multiplying by 3.281, meaning the individual can also claim to be 5'9 feet (1.8 × 3.281).
