A cart rolls with low friction on a track. A fan is mounted on the cart, and when the fan is turned on, there is a constant force acting on the cart. Three different experiments are performed: (a) Fan off: The cart is originally at rest. You give it a brief push, and it coasts a long distance along the track in the x direction, slowly coming to a stop. (b) Fan forward: The fan is turned on, and you hold the cart stationary. You then take your hand away, and the cart moves forward, in the x direction. After traveling a long distance along the track, you quickly stop and hold the cart. (c) Fan backward: The fan is turned on facing the "wrong" way, and you hold the cart stationary. You give it a brief push, and the cart moves forward, in the x direction, slowing down and then turning around, returning to the starting position, where you quickly stop and hold the cart.

Comedians like to joke that the reason we haven’t been visited by intelligent life from elsewhere in the universe is that aliens have been monitoring earth’s broadcasts of intellectually embarrassing tv programs, like gilligan’s island, fear factor, the jersey shore, and the jerry springer showand so consider us far too primitive to merit a visit. let’s check the assertion that aliens could have been receiving them. tv programs are broadcast at a frequency of about 100mhz with about 100kw of total power in 30frames per second, which emanatesroughly uniformly in all directions. assume that interstellar space transmits these broadcasts without attenuation. no matter how smart they are, aliens would require at least one photon per frame to interpret our signals. findthe number of photons per unit time per unit area reaching a receiver on a possible planet in the nearest star system, which is about 4 light-years away (a light-year is the distance light travels in a year). if aliens aimed a receiver or detector directly at earth, how big (in diameter) would it have to be to receive a photon per frame

The space between two 15-in.-long concentric cylinders is filled with glycerin (viscosity = 8.5 × 10-3 lb·s/ft2). the inner cylinder has a radius of 1 in. and the gap width between cylinders is 0.1 in. determine (a) the torque and (b) the power required to rotate the inner cylinder at 180 rev/min. the outer cylinder is fixed. assume the velocity distribution in the gap to be linear.
