Our five senses and emotions help us to create memories of events in our lives. In this lesson, you saw a brief video on how people remember events. Now you will conduct an interview with someone, asking about a significant event in that person’s life.

This assessment has three parts. Read the requirements of each part, including the rubric, before you begin.

Part I: Interview

Choose someone you know and ask the person about an important event in his or her life. Examples may include, but are not limited to, where he or she was when:

Neil Armstrong walked on the moon
John F. Kennedy was assassinated
Space Shuttle Challenger exploded
The World Trade Center was attacked
Barack Obama was elected President
A significant personal event occurred
Take notes as the person recalls the details of the event. Use the Memory of an Event Recording Sheet for tips on taking notes. This document will not be submitted as part of your grade but will help you in parts II and III of this assessment.

Part II: Creative Display of Interview

What triggers did this person have? What sensory or emotional descriptions did this person use as he or she recalled the memory?

Get your creative juices flowing and think of a way to display what the person told you in the interview, and how picturing and association played a part in the description of the event. Examples of your work may include but are not limited to:

A digital story that retells the memory using sensory and emotional details
Photo essay—done in a presentation program or word-processing document, includes a photo and text on each slide or page, and tells a complete story—that includes examples of the sensory and emotional details of the memory
A photo or video collage (an assembly of various images or pieces of art, accompanied by text or audio) of the sensory and emotional details of the memory
You will submit the link or document for your creative display, depending on your choice.

Part III: Reflection

Which of the five senses do you notice as triggers when you recall personal memories? Which emotions create triggers for your personal memories? As you look back on the interview you conducted, how are your sensory and emotional triggers the same or different from the person you interviewed?

Be sure to write in complete sentences in your reflection. Your reflection should be at least four to six sentences in length. You may include this as the last part of your creative display in Part II.

View the rubric to see how you will be graded on this assessment.

Once you have completed all parts of this assessment, submit it to your instructor for grading as 01.05 Memory Triggers in the assessment area.
