Pendulum Lab 2.03 has a variety of variables that you can adjust to complete this question, e. g. length can be controlled by the slide bar, or by typing in the value you want. There is friction bar to adjust how much friction is present but for these questions you can leave it off. You can adjust how fast the animation runs and more. There is a photogate timer and other tools to help make measurements. https://phet. colorado. edu/sims/pendulum-lab/pendulum-lab_ en. html

(a) Set the mass to 1.00 kg at a length of 2.00 m. Measure the period of the oscillation for the following amplitudes: 2°, 5°, 8°, 11°, 13°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 45°, 55°, and 75°. Sketch a plot of the period as a function of amplitude. What can you conclude about the dependence of the period on the amplitude of the oscillation? Is a pendulum always a simple harmonic oscilla- tor?
(b) Set the mass to 2.00 kg at a length of 2.00 m. Observe the total energy level (show energy box) as the pendulum oscillates through a complete cycle for the following amplitudes: 2°, 5°, 8°, 11°, 13° and 15°. Sketch a plot of the total energy, as a function of oscillation amplitude. What can you conclude about the dependence of the total energy on the amplitude of the oscil- lation? What does this mean for the pendulums period as a function of energy (for small angles, ɵ < 15°)?
(c) Set the mass to 2.00 kg and start with a length of 0.50 m. Measure the period for varying lengths of the pendulum then calculate the frequency using their relationship. For an amplitude of 10°, sketch a plot of omega as a function of length. How does it compare to a plot of one over the square root of x?
theta= 10 deg L= .50m L=1.00m L=1.50m L=2.00m
Period T= T= T= T=
angular Frequency w= w= w= w=
d) Set the length to 1.5m and the angle to 10°. Vary the mass and make a sketch of the period as a function of mass.
m=.5kg m=1kg m=1.5kg m=2kg
T= T= T= T=
(e) Click the button show energy. In a short paragraph discuss the Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, and Total Energy of the pendulum as it goes from through a complete cycle. How does compare to when friction is added?
