In the school cafeteria, a trouble-making child blows a 12.0 g spitball through a 25.0 cm straw. The force (F) in Newtons, of his breath as a function of the distance along the straw (x) in meters, can be modeled as a linearly decreasing function for the first half of the straw, followed by a constant force through the rest of the straw. The force decreases by half along the first half of the straw. Assume there is negligible friction and the straw is held horizontally. (a) Sketch a plot of the force of his breath as a function of position along the straw, labeling the force at x = 0 as F0.
(b) If the spitball begins from rest and leaves the straw with a speed of 16 m/s, how much work is done on the spitball?
(c) What is the maximum force F0, that acts on the spitball?

Afisherman notices that his boat is moving up and down periodically without any horizontal motion, owing to waves on the surface of the water. it takes a time of 2.20 s for the boat to travel from its highest point to its lowest, a total distance of 0.670 m . the fisherman sees that the wave crests are spaced a horizontal distance of 5.80 m apart. (a) how much is the wavelength? (b) find the period of the wave. (c) how fast are the waves traveling? (d) what is the amplitude a of each wave?

A47.2 g block of copper whose temperature is 480 k is placed in an insulating box with a 91.8 g block of lead whose temperature is 200 k. (a) what is the equilibrium temperature of the two-block system? (b) what is the change in the internal energy of the two-block system between the initial state and the equilibrium state? (c) what is the change in the entropy of the two-block system? the heat capacities of copper and lead are 386 j/kg·k and 128 j/kg·k, respectively.
