A) Consider a heated sphere at 127oC. Using 27oC air as the ambient fluid plot the convection coefficient of heat transfer, h, due to free convection as a function of the diameter (for 0.1 mm < D < 100. mm). Use log-log plot. include typed derivation and show all units. B) Consider a heated sphere of diameter D = 1.0 cm and emissivity  = 0.8 at Ts (in oC) in an ideal gas with surroundings at 27oC. On a single plot:
a. Plot the heat transfer (in Watts) due to free convection for 30oC < Ts < 400oC. b. Plot the heat transfer (in Watts) due to radiation for 30oC < Ts < 400oC. c. Plot the combined heat transfer (in Watts) for 30oC < Ts < 400oC. Use the following fluid properties (assumed to be constant): k = 0.0263 W/(m oC),  = 15.9 x 10-6 m2/s and Pr = 0.71.

Astudent is performing an experiment comparing sound and light waves. the student gathers the following data. what conclusion does the student most likely make based on this data? light waves always travel the same speed; however, the speed of sound is determined by the medium that it travels through. all sound waves always have the same energy, so the temperature of the medium does not affect wave speed. light needs to vibrate particles, so it travels fastest in tightly packed solids, while sound does not need a medium, so it travels fastest in a gas. tightly packed particles in solids slow down the light waves; however, sound waves make particles bounce into each other, so they travel faster in solids.

Which statements describe the movement of ocean currents around the globe? check all that apply. strong winds force warm water to sink to the ocean floor. the coriolis effect causes warm and cold water to mix. cool dense water sinks to the ocean floor. warm water replaces cool surface water. wind blowing parallel to the shore causes upwelling of cool water.

Although longitudinal waves can travel through all media types what is the disadvantage of this type of wave transmission? a) he efficiency of he wave transmission is greatly diminished as the media becomes less dense b) the oscillation of one set of particles has a huge impact on neighboring particles c) particles become too close together as they bump into each other making it more likely to hit other particles down the line
