An exploding star: A planet of mass m is in a circular orbit about a star of mass M at an initial distance of r. The non-rotating star then explodes and ejects half of its mass radially outward in a symmetric fashion with none of its ejecta hitting the planet. After the star's explosion find the new radius of the planet about the star. I got a response with
mrw^2 = GMm / r^2 ,
w^2 = GM / r^3
but could not figure out how to derive the expression. Is it using Conversation of Energy? I understand the Conservation of Momentum part, just didn't get how to obtain the velocity part. Could you please break down the components/energy equation?

When a vertical beam of light passes through a transparent medium, the rate at which its intensity i decreases is proportional to i(t), where t represents the thickness of the medium (in feet). in clear seawater, the intensity 3 feet below the surface is 25% of the initial intensity i0 of the incident beam. what is the intensity of the beam "10" feet below the surface? (give your answer in terms of i0. round any constants or coefficients to five decimal places.)
