The pupil (the opening through which light enters the lens) of a house cat’s eye is round under low light, but ciliary muscles narrow it to a thin vertical slit in very bright light. Assume that bright light of wavelength 550 nm in air is entering the eye perpendicular to the lens and that the pupil has narrowed to a slit that is 0.500 mm wide. What are the three smallest angles on either side of the central maximum at which no light will reach the cat’s retina (a) if we imagine the eye is filled with air and (b) if we take into consideration that in reality the eye is filled with a fluid having index of refraction of approximately 1.4? (c) Would the cat be aware of the pattern of alternating dark and light fringes? Why or why not?
