Imagineu que teniu dos flascons que contenen masses iguals de dos elements, el primer amb magnesi, Ar(Mg)=24, i el segon amb carboni, Ar(C)=12. Sense cap més dada, podeu deudir el carboni conté una quantitat d'àtoms dues vegades més gran que el magnesí, perquè la massa dels àtoms de carboni és exactament la meitat que la dels àtoms de magnesí
