Explanation:

The glow sticks are made of plastic case within which there is a small glass capsule.

     The outer tube contain chemical diphenyl oxalate and a dye which determine the color of the glow stick.

     The inner glass capsule consists of hydrogen peroxide.

When the outer tube is bent the small capsule containing hydrogen peroxide is broken. The substance in the glow stick  and reaction takes place releasing carbon di oxide and chemical energy  which is converted to visible light.

The reaction does not produce light but the reaction has energy to excite the electrons in the dye and when electron return from higher energy level to lower energy level they emit photons ie light.

The energy is released in form of light and it is and exergonic reaction.

The light produced is an example of chemiluminescence.

The light can be made to shine bright and brief or dim and long lasting by changing ratio of the compounds used and also by changing temperature.

ie when the glow stick is bent in hot water it glows brightly for short period due to high energy of molecules.
