The first telegraphic messages crossed the Atlantic in 1858, by a cable 3000 km long laid between Newfoundland and Ireland. The conductor in this cable consisted of seven copper wires, each of diameter 0.73 mm, bundled together and surrounded by an insulating sheath. (a) Calculate the resistance of the conductor. Use3⋅10−8ohm-meter for the resistivity of the copper, which was of somewhat dubious purity. (b) A return path for the current was provided by the ocean itself. Given that the resistivity of seawater is about 0.25 ohm-meter, see if you can show that the resistance of the ocean return would have been much smaller than that of the cable. (Assume that the electrodes immersed in the water were spheres with radius, say, 10 cm.)

Arocket starts from rest and moves upward from the surface of the earth. for the first 10.0 s of its motion, the vertical acceleration of the rocket is given by ay = 12.80 m/s32t, where the +y-direction is upward. (a) what is the height of the rocket above the surface of the earth at t = 10.0 s? b) what is the speed of the rocket when it is 325 m above the surface of the earth?

An astronaut in space cannot use a scale or balance to weigh objects because there is no gravity. but she does have devices to measure distance and time accurately. she knows her own mass is 77.4 kg , but she is unsure of the mass of a large gas canister in the airless rocket. when this canister is approaching her at 3.50 m/s , she pushes against it, which slows it down to 1.30 m/s (but does not reverse it) and gives her a speed of 2.60 m/s . what is the mass of the canister?

In a game of pool, ball a is moving with a velocity v0 of magnitude v0 = 15 ft/s when it strikes balls b and c, which are at rest and aligned as shown. knowing that after the collision the three balls move in the directions indicated and assuming frictionless surfaces and perfectly elastic impact (that is, conservation of energy), determine the magnitudes of the velocities va, vb, and vc.
