A steel BB of mass m is shot from an air rifle, strikes horizontally with speed v an initially stationary steel block of mass M, collides elastically, and bounces off horizontally. The mass of the block is much larger than that of the BB. The block hangs by a rope like a pendulum and, as a result of the collision, swings and reaches a maximum height h.

1. Which statement best describes this collision as compared to other types collision?

a. The colliding bodies do not stick together
b. Kinetic energy is conserved in the collision
c. Momentum is conserved in the collision.
d. None of the statements describe the collision.
e. The colliding bodies stick together.

2. What is true about the speed at which the BB bounces off the block?
3. Now imagine that the BB is shot at twice the original speed. What happe the potential energy gained by the block at maximum height?
4. Now consider that the BB is shot at a speed that causes the maximum hei of the block to be half what it was in the first scenario. What statement is true about new situation compared to the original one?

Acoal-fired plant generates 600 mw of electric power. the plant uses 4.8 x 10^6 kg of coal each day, and the heat of combustion of coal is 3.3x 10^7 j/kg. the steam that drives the turbines is at a temperature of 300° c, and the exhaust water is at 37° c. (a) what is the overall efficiency of the plant for generating electric power? (b) how much thermal energy is exhausted each day? (c) what is the change in entropy of the universe for this heat engine? (d) using the same heat reservoirs, what is the maximum possible (carnot) efficiency for a heat engine?
