And, yes there is a vast distance between nucleus and the electrons and it's about ten billionth of a meter. So the question is if there is such an empty space then why not our body just move through the chair and fall?  So the answer is, it's all due to the forces. Just like the cracking of lightning through the void, specks of electrons and nuclei are constantly interacting through the force called electromagnetic forces. During each interaction there is an exchange of energy particles called photons. So the each photon swapped is equals to the push or pull or the forces exerted across the emptiness. So these forces enable us to sit on chair or to do other things.
