You represent an industrial client who discharges a sewage effluent with a mass flow rate of 10 kg/s of total organic carbon (TOC) into the Rahway River. The stretch of river is straight and has a flow rate of 1 cubic meter / sec in a channel that has a cross section of 10 square meters. The TOC will degrade via a first order decay process with a rate coefficient of 0.25 hr-1. There is a water intake located 2 km downstream that cannot have more than 2 ppm of TOC in their water. Assume plug flow in the stream and the only process that occurs is the decay. Is my discharge going to have an impact on the downstream water intake?

As you are trying to move a heavy box of mass m, you realize that it is too heavy for you to lift by yourself. there is no one around to , so you attach an ideal pulley to the box and a massless rope to the ceiling, which you wrap around the pulley. you pull up on the rope to lift the box. use g for the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity and neglect friction forces. once you have pulled hard enough to start the box moving upward, what is the magnitude f of the upward force you must apply to the rope to start raising the box with constant velocity? express the magnitude of the force in terms of m, the mass of the box.
