The experiment i am running this fall at jefferson national laboratory will measure subatomic particles called "kaons". the kaons will be produced by colliding high energy electrons with a proton target and using einstein's most famous law, e = mc2. a) if the kaons have a mass of mk = 493.7 mev/c2 and are measured to have a momentum of 3.100 gev/c calculate the relativistic factor, y. [hint: use the total relativistic energy of the particle, e2 = (mc2)2 + pac2.] b) the kaons travel 20 meters to the detector. use the relativistic factor from part (b) to find how long it takes to travel this distance. c) if the half-life of a kaon is 1.238 x 10-8 s, what fraction of the kaons will be left after traveling to the detectors?
