The substances that are the most responsible for the damage done on the ozone layer are the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). The CFC's are very light, so they get up into the atmosphere with ease. While they are in the lower part of the atmosphere they do not cause any particular problems as the UV radiation is very limited, but that all changes when they reach the ozone layer. Once they reach the ozone layer in the stratosphere, the CFC's are exposed to much stronger UV radiation. This causes them to dissociate and release chlorine atoms. Once this has happened, these atoms manage to break down the bond between the oxygen atoms, thus destroying the ozone layer.
