How does the position of an object relate to the energy stored in an object?

An object can store energy as the result of its position.

In a case such as the heavy ball of a demolition machine is storing energy when it is held at an elevated position. This stored energy of position here is known to as potential energy.

This is the stored energy that depends upon the relative position of various parts of a system.

A steel ball has more potential energy raised above the ground than it has after falling to Earth.
