If a magnet is broken into two pieces what happens to the magnetic poles?

A magnet is a bundle of tiny magnets, called magnetic domains, that are jammed together. Each one reinforces the magnetic fields of the others. Each one has a tiny north and south pole. If we cut one in half, the newly cut faces will become the new north or south poles of the smaller pieces.

We could keep slicing smaller and smaller slices like a loaf of bread and keep getting thinner magnets, each with a new set of poles. If they are in a random orientation, with their fields pointing all over the place, they cancel each other out.

When magnet is broken into two pieces then there will be two new poles of magnet.

It means let say we have a magnet with North - South Poles then after the magnet is broken into two piece we will have two small magnets with North - South and North - South poles.

It shows that we will always have two new poles when magnet is broken into two pieces and there is no effect on pole strength is as it will remain the same.

So the strength of magnetic field will not change and it always be the same as the initial strength of magnetic field.

Now there is one physical quantity will change due size of magnet. It is magnetic moment of magnet. Magnetic moment is defined as product of pole strength and distance between the poles.

So it we break the magnet into two parts then our pole strength will be same but the length of magnet will change which shows that the magnetic moment will also becomes less than initial value

So overall we can say that we will have to check two things after magnet is break

1. Magnetic moment of the magnet which will be lesser than initial value as it depends on the length of magnet.

2. pole strength will have no change as it will not depends on length.
