So since Carlos planted 6 more than 1/3 cucumbers this year and he planted 12 plants you simply have to find how much does 1/3 equal out of 12.

So 4 plants equal 1/3. Now the problem said he planted 6 MORE than 1/3 so you have to add 6.

    6 more plants
+  4 original plants

  10 cucumber plants
