I don't like either but ok

if a function is even, it can be reflected about the y axis and map onto itself
if f(x) is even then f(-x)=f(x)

if a function is odd then it can be reflected about the x and y axis and map onto itself
if f(x) is odd then f(-x)=-f(x)

replace x with -x to see what happens

f(-x)=-(-x)^40+1
f(-x)=-x^40+1
same function
that means it's even
