Being a doctor might seem like a great career. And it is a great career for many people. But some people aren't so eager to become a doctor when they find out it takes a minimum of eight years of education, after high school, followed by a few years of residency before you can open your own practice. Are you good at helping others with their problems? Being a counselor may be appealing, but many states require you to perform 2,000 hours of supervised, free therapy before you're allowed to become licensed and practice on your own.

The point is that all jobs have qualifications. And the qualifications for each job are different. But this shouldn't discourage you from pursuing a career that really interests you. If you love doing something, it will probably be worth any sacrifices you have to make. But it's good to be aware of the requirements ahead of time because then you'll know what you're getting into and be able to make an informed decision.

Below is a list of general categories and specific careers. Choose a specific career that interests you. (It's okay to choose something that's not on the list.)

Science biologist, chemist, physicist, earth scientist, pharmacist, seismologist, ecologist, astronomer, volcanologist, doctor, paleontologist, veterinarian, marine biologist
Technology computer scientist, computer engineer, game designer, information technology specialist, programmer, cryptanalyst, hardware engineer, animator, software developer
Engineering mechanical engineer, biomedical engineer, civil engineer, electrical engineer, industrial engineer, nuclear engineer, geological engineer
Mathematics mathematician, statistician, actuary, accountant, biomathematician, cryptographer
Humanities artist, linguist, theologian, philosopher, writer, journalist, historian, musician, editor
Social Sciences psychologist, social worker, archaeologist, anthropologist, economist, lawyer, therapist
Education elementary or high school teacher, college professor, principal, curriculum developer
Now that you've selected a career, you will need to do some research about it. You can search online or at a library. Then answer the following questions:

What career did you choose and why?
What type of education do you need for this career?
Does the career require any special training? Certification? Licenses?
How long does the training and/or education for this career take?
Is it a standard nine-to-five job? Does it have special time requirements?
Are a lot of people in this career field?
What locations in the United States offer jobs in this career field?
Can you work out of the country with this career?
Is it a mostly male- or female-dominated career?
What is the general salary range? Did this have any influence over your choice of this career?
What character and personality traits will help you be successful in the career you chose?
After researching the career, did you learn anything about the job that you didn't realize before?
