Topic: Pre calculus (Conic Sections: Hyperbola)

1.)

A ship 5 km north of island I(1) , wishes tk go to point X est of I(1). Since the advanced navigational system of the ship malfunctioned, they have to rely on a back-up system that uses radio signals from I(1) and another island, I(2). The captain is informed that they will reach X if they maintained the current difference in their distances from I(1) and I(2). If I(2) is 12 km east of I(1). How far is X from I(1).

2.) Anna lives 10 km west of Jose. One quiet evening, Anna suddenly hears a loud explosion. If Jose hears the explosion exactly 22 6/7 seconds later, find the collection of all possible locations of the explosion source. Assume that sound travels at a speed of 350 m s^-1.

3.) The foci of a hyperbola are (-5,-3) and (9,-3). For any point on the hyperbola, the absolute value of the difference of its of its distances from the foci is 10. Find the standard equation of the hyperbola.

Browning labs is testing a new growth inhibitor for a certain type of bacteria. the bacteria naturally grows exponentially each hour at a rate of 6.2%. the researchers know that the inhibitor will make the growth rate of the bacteria less than or equal to its natural growth rate. the sample currently contains 100 bacteria.the container holding the sample can hold only 300 bacteria, after which the sample will no longer grow. however, the researchers are increasing the size of the container at a constant rate allowing the container to hold 100 more bacteria each hour. they would like to determine the possible number of bacteria in the container over time.create a system of inequalities to model the situation above, and use it to determine how many of the solutions are viable.
