Whether a convicted murderer gets the death penalty seems to be influenced by the race of the victim. Here are data on 326 cases in which the defendant was convicted of murder. White Defendant Black Defendant
Death Penalty Death Penalty
Yes No Yes No
White Victim 19 132 White Victim 11 52
Black Victim 0 9 Black Victim 6 97

Use these data to make a 2-way table of defendant's race (white or black) along the top of the table versus death penalty (yes or no) down the left side of the table. Use your 2-way table and the 3-way table above to show that Simpson's (not O. J.!) paradox holds: a higher percent of white defendants are sentenced to death overall, but for both black and white victims a higher percent of black defendants are sentenced to death. To do this, find the following:

a. Percent of all white defendants sentenced to death.
b. Percent of all black defendants sentenced to death.
c. Which defendants, black or white, have the higher percentage of death penalties?
