Udah challenges R’Mani to a race. They go out to the STX Central High school’s football field and Judah tells R’Mani that they each have to start at the goal line and race to where the football is on the opposite goal line. Kelise places the football on the opposite goal line – 20 feet from the sideline, closest to the highway. Both Judah and R’Mani must stand on opposite ends of the sideline. Judah is standing on the sideline end closest to the highway. R’Mani can tell that Judah has an advantage due to being closer to the football. Judah tells R’Mani that he can start the race from the 10-yard line instead of the goal line (but he still has to be at the sideline). Amar begins crunching numbers to mathematically determine who is closer to the football and who will have the advantage. Once he is done, Amar informs Judah that he is still closer to the football than R’Mani. Draw a diagram of the field and everyone’s position – including the football.

Diagram must include:

Goal lines and sidelines

Judah’s position

Ryan’s original AND new position

Football (where Kelise places it)

Conversions of yards to feet

Calculations of distances (Judah to football and R’Mani to football.

Answer with detailed explanation. (show steps)

Question: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to answer the question – Is Amar correct in telling Judah that he is closer to the football than R’Mani. You MUST be able to prove your answer using the diagram and calculations.
