Joshua Slocum was the first person to sail around the world alone. Most of
his childhood was spent on merchant ships, and he truly grew up
on the sea. He originally planned to make his solo, round-the-world trip In 1894 but had to delay the journey for several months. He needed to
complete restoration of his old nineteenth-century fishing boat, the Spray, which was not in seaworthy shape. Finally, Slocum left from Boston,
Massachusetts, on April 24, 1895. He stopped at varlous places along the way to visit with people. Reading books helped Slocum pass long hours
alone on the boat. He sailed Into Fairhaven, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1898. Alone in the Spray, Joshua Slocum had traveled more than 46,000 miles.
He published an account of his journey in 1900, and the publicity made him famous and wealthy. Slocum traveled the world afterward, lecturing
about his adventures on the sea.
When he read the passage, Neil thought the word restoration meant "rebuilding."
Based on the passage, was Neil correct?
1. No, because that passage implies that Slocum's old nineteenth-century fishing boat cannot be rebuilt.
2. Yes, because the passage tells how "rebuilding" refers to the special preparation required by his type of merchant ship.
3. No, because the passage states how Slocum needed to stop at various places along the way to have repairs done.
4. Yes, because the passage describes how Slocum
needed to improve the condition of his boat before he could begin his journey
