Task: Building Expressions You can build algebraic expressions using algebra tiles by laying out the number of tiles indicated by the coefficient and variable parts of each term.

For example, to build the trinomial 3x2+4x+2, lay out three x2 tiles, four x tiles, and two unit tiles.

Each algebra tile has two sides, one positive and one “negative”. You can use the “negative” side of the tiles to build polynomials that use negative coefficients. (Note: The red side of the tile typically represents the “negative” value. If you printed your own tiles, use a symbol or color to represent the “negative” side. If you are using the online tiles linked in this activity, click any tile on the mat once to turn it “negative”.)

For example, to build the binomial -x-2, lay out one red x tile to represent the term -x and two red unit tiles to represent the term -2.

[10 points each] Use your algebra tiles to build and sketch each expression as a tile figure. Make sure to indicate any “negative” tiles in your drawing with color or labels. (Part 1 -3)

2: x2-3x+6
