Like terms are either CONSTANTS, or they are terms with the same VARIABLE that have the same EXPONENT. Some examples: 9x and 5x are like terms because they both have the same variable (x) with the same exponent (1). however, 5 and 5x are not like terms, because one is a constant while the other has a variable. hope this helps you out
