By pythagorean theorem,

hyp^2 = x^2 + h^2

hyp = hypotenuse = 5 ft.
x = ?
h = height = 3 ft.


5^2 = x^2 + 3^2
25 = x^2 + 9
25 - 9 = x^2
16 = x^2
sqrt(16) = x
x = 4 ft.

the answer is 4 ft.

If there are four friends then each would get, 1.25 or 1 1/4. so this is how i solved 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25 . hope this ; )
