Set it up into equations
x=shirts
y=shorts

12x + 8y = $416
x+y = 41
now solve for x, and substitute into other equation
x=41 - y
12(41 - y) + 8y =$416
492y - 12y + 8y = $416
-4y = -76
y= 19
so now take y and put into either equation:  x + 19 = 41, x= 22
