Than the length of the longer pieces = 4x - 4

Than the equation becomes

x + 4x - 4 = 11

5x = 11 + 4

5x = 15

x = 3 ft

Therefore the length of the shorter pieces be 3 ft .

                                                      = 4 × 3 - 4
