3n-1

where n = 1 ; n = 2 ; n = 3

3(n) - 1 = 3(1) - 1 = 3 - 1 = 2
3(n) - 1 = 3(2) - 1 = 6 - 1 = 5
3(n) - 1 = 3(3) - 1 = 9 - 1 = 8
