We discussed degeneracy and related concepts during lesson 10 (Feb 22nd) and mentioned how a tie for ratios can signal degeneracy. In fact there are several such signals: (i) There is a tie for the ratios in the calculation to determine a leaving variable. (ii) A corner point is the solution of two (or more) different sets of equality constraints. (iii) There is a row in simplex tableau with value (i. e. last column) equal to 0. (iv) There is a basic feasible solution where some basic variable has value 0. (v) The constraints are redundant; some are linear combinations of others. Explain how the above situations are related. Use algebra (simplex method, basic feasible solutions), and geometry of feasible regions. (Make your explanations clear and concise. You do not have to prove them, just explain).
